Can 110 contacts be terminated with an LSA Plus punchdown tool?

IDC Connecting Blocks

Patch panels, outlets and RJ45 modules typically have either LSA Plus or 110 contacts. Can the LSA Plus punchdown tool also be used for 110 contacts and vice versa? Read on to find the answer.

Answer: LSA Plus and 110 contacts look similar, however they are not compatible regarding the punchdown tools. 110 contacts are orientated in an angle of 90 degrees to the the wires‘ centerlines whereas LSA Plus contacts are orientated in an angle of 45 degrees to the the wires‘ centerlines. Because of this, LSA Plus tools must not be used to terminate 110 contacts and vice versa as they would damage the contacts severely.

Contacts like LSA Plus that are not orientated in a right angle to the wires‘ centerlines offer particularly good electrical contact and can accept high retention forces. Because of this, the contacts are particularly reliable. This is why Telegärtner uses only LSA Plus contacts in their products.

Nobody knows everything. A comprehensive topic like IT cabling inevitably raises questions. This column gives answers to questions which reached Telegärtner’s Technical Helpdesk and which we consider interesting for everyone. Please do not hesitate to send us your questions, we will be happy to answer them. The questions will be published anonymously, of course.
