IP67 is not enough for outdoor connectors

25.05.2023 | TD

IP67 rated industrial connectors are protected against ingress of dust and humidity. Outdoor applications, however, have some more and much harder requirements. IP67 is not enough.

Industrial environments put a lot of stress and strains on the IT cabling: Dust, humidity, heat, cold, temperature variations, shock, vibrations and strong electromagnetic fields all have an effect on the connecting hardware. To make sure the connectors will work well for a long time, protective housings are needed.

In outdoor applications connections have to face even more extreme conditions common industrial connectors would not withstand: Many years of UV light, frost wedging, extreme cold in winter and extreme heat in summer, enormous temperature variations – outdoor connectors are made for harsh environments.

Reliable outdoor connectors have to be

  • UV-resistant
  • weatherproof
  • frostproof
  • designed for a temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C
  • mechanically robust.

Outdoor connectors have to work flawlessly for many years without maintenance. Care has to be taken that plug and jack are well protected when they are not mated. Threaded protective caps with robust sealings have proven their worth. Ideally they are connected to the housing with a bond or chain so they do not get lost when not in use.

Easy installation required

Installation in outdoor applications has to be quick and easy. Only rarely connectors are installed in comfortable and easy to reach spaces. Typically they are installed in great heights at poles and walls, in niches, in confined spaces, on construction machines and conveyor systems in wide areas. So despite of being extremely robust and despite the comprehensive protection they offer, outdoor connectors have to be insalled quick and easy, during wind, bad weather and in confined spaces.

In such environments it pays to invest in the connectors‘ high quality. TOC outdoor connectors by Telegärtner have been proving their worth for many years under the worst conditions in the harshest environments. Users appreicate the reliability and the easy handling of TOC connectors. When the TOC plug housing is screwed to the outlet, the sealing of the cable exit closes at the same time – just one installation step and nothing is forgotten.
