White paper “IT connectors for harsh environment“

05.01.2024 | IT connectors that are desingned for indoor use must not be used in outdoor applications. This includes IP67 rated industrial connectors. This white paper focuses on different operation conditions of IT connectors and the protective measures that go with it.

Classical IT connectors like RJ45, LC duplex and MPO were originally designed for customer premises with protected environments. Nowadays devices that have, an IP connection are used literally anywhere, in industrial premises as well as in automotive applications, mining and many more indoor and outdoor applications. Harsh environments like those require durable connections.

Typical IP67 rated industrial connectors are protected against ingress of dust and water. However they were designed for environments inside of buildings. Outside of buildings, connectors are facing additional and much more demanding requirements that ordinary industrial connectors cannot meet. Years of UV radiation, frost wedging caused by freezing water, extreme cold in winter and heat in summer plus an enormous temperature range – outdoor connectors are made for extreme conditions.
